Their gesture attracted worldwide comment and drew the attention of football fans to Iran's political turmoil. Now the country's authorities have taken revenge by imposing life bans on players who sported green wristbands in a recent World Cup match in protest against Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's disputed re-election.
According to the pro-government newspaper Iran, four players – Ali Karimi, 31, Mehdi Mahdavikia, 32, Hosein Ka'abi, 24 and Vahid Hashemian, 32 – have been "retired" from the sport after their gesture in last Wednesday's match against South Korea in Seoul.
They were among six players who took to the field wearing wristbands in the colour of the defeated opposition candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi, which has been adopted by demonstrators who believe the 12 June election was stolen.
Most of the players obeyed instructions to remove the armwear at half-time, but Mahdavikia wore his green captain's armband for the entire match. The four are also said to have been banned from giving media interviews.
The fate of the other two players who wore the wristbands is unknown. None of the team members were given back their passports upon returning to Tehran after the match, which ended in a 1-1 draw – a result that ended Iran's hopes of qualifying for next year's tournament.
Karimi is one of Iranian football's best-known stars, having played for the German club Bayern Munich. Ka'abi played for Leicester City for several months during the 2007/8 season. Hashemian and Mahdavikia play for the German teams Bochum and Eintracht Frankfurt.
The gesture acutely embarrassed Iranian officials. The team's chief administrative officer, Mansour Pourhiedari, initially claimed the wristbands had been intended as a religious tribute to a revered Shia figure in the hope that it would deliver a victory on the pitch.
Iran's hardline media have since linked the protest to the arrest on Saturday of Mohsen Safayi Farahani, who headed the country's football governing body under the former reformist president, Mohammad Khatami. He is one of several dozen opposition politicians, intellectuals and journalists to have been detained.
Hezbollah, a pro-Ahmadinejad website, accused Farahani, a member of the pro-reform Islamic participation front, of bribing the players to wear the symbols. Farahani was one of several prominent figures accused by Ahmadinejad of corruption during the recent election campaign.
Ahmadinejad, a known football fan, has taken a close interest in the sport's affairs. In 2006 Iran was banned from international competition by the world governing body Fifa after claims of improper interference by his government. The ban was later lifted.
This year the national team coach Ali Daei was sacked, reportedly on Ahmadinejad's orders, after a 2-1 home defeat by Saudi Arabia.

Analise interessante sobre a crise no Iran

Mundo 22.06.2009

Sim, ele parece acreditar nisso.

Neda!!!!!!!!!!!! Jovem morta nos protestos

"The power of Neda"

all my life as a child i was trying to find a way to run away from Iran. from the madness ! schools were terrible, everyday i had problem in school, the clash of islamic education system and extremely open minded families. inside the house was always beautiful, full of people, food... outside we covered, were always in stage of fear, the streets were dark and the people depressed and tired. In school we had to study religion and Quran and pray, inside the houses everyone drank, partied, played cards, danced ... Outside there were no bars, we would go to coffeeshop scared of Basij at all times, inside the house we had satelites, faster internet than i have here...We had the most modern life in a country that was governed by cows. but we didn't care. we were so far from politics or religion that now i feel like if we had a leader, if we had known a little better it wouldve been easier and i wouldn't been here going crazy worried not knowing anything about anything....I started traveling from one city to another, anywhere they let me in i'd be there. trying to find a home, somewhere safe that i could be free. somewhere that the government wouldn't jump the walls coming inside your houses and take you to jail because of being in a party !!! or your father would be in danger at all times just because he was a businessman or .... i can't tell you enough but life was amazing. we had huge housed, cars, very stylish culture, very educated people...... i always dreamt of living somewhere that i could have a bike and a little dog and be free. that was my biggest dream. it took me 10 years to come to America. As an Iranian people always looked at me as a ..... they had this weird expression of Iranian people being like Basiji's and i gave up trying to tell them that no i'm not Arab, no i'm not a terrorist, no i'm just a girl who's in search of the truth and in search of her own destiny !!!I have the most amazing parents in Life. yes we did have an extremely hard life yet we loved one another, we loved each other to death without even talking to one another. This is what ive been seeing the last week i feel this energy that i'm totally connected to the whole world !!! there is this passion inside our blood as we come together !!! as we become ONE ! if you know me you know i always say that we are one, connected yet so far from one another.i totally feel i'm ONE. ONE UNITED IRAN !!! beautiful, young, talented, brave, generation born on the revolution !!! it's true that what's happening is nothing less than a revolution within a revolution. now that i'm here totally safe in America my biggest dream in life was to be BE HOME !!! TO FIGHT FOR WHAT THEY TOOK FROM ME FOR 30 YEARS, THE FREEDOM TO CHOSE MY DESTINY, the Love of my life. Still remembering how they bruised my soul but i want to be there to just tell them that yes i've been wandering in the world but hey i'm home and this is where i wanna be. i feel useless, frustrated yet amazingly hopeful !!! i've been imagining this day. WE'VE BEEN GROWING UP WITH THIS DREAM. WE'VE ALL TALKED ABOUT IT and ...i feel this is the example of Synergy. Unity. i think we are changing History of this world !!! we empty hands yet united. we don't need nothing but one another.i think we gave sense to twitter, facebook, news, and the meaning of FREEDOM. the walls are getting smaller and smaller, i feel like i can't breath any more, the more i hear, the more death i see , i don't have any tear to shed !!! Tomorrow we are silently walking mourning the lives we've lost !!! watching a teenage girl bleeding to death in the middle of the street. what a hero, did she know before leaving the house? in the arms of her father !!! oh God not a second in my life i stop thinking about my father... even if we don't talk every day which we almost do !!!Rest in Peace my brothers and sisters who lost their lives in the path of freedom for all of us. i from all my heart thank you for standing up for us. thank you people tell me that they will never take their freedom for granted. half of the people i met in life didn't even know what is freedom !!! i think as iranians we were free. we had excitement in our lives, we TRUSTED ONE ANOTHER NO MATTER WHAT, we had one another. even in those madness we managed to be free, laugh, be together, hang out and have fun. what a grand people !! walking in the streets in silence fighting a regime of nuclear power....what is going on !!! are we really in 2009 !!! are we really what we say we are ??? people of peace !!! everyone teaches you how to breath and how to live !!! do they really feel what they say !!! i just know that I AM PROUD OF BEING IRANIAN . I've always been but tonight my HEART is also Iranian I CRY WHEN THE SPACE SHUTTLE TAKE OF, IT REMINDS ME HOW FAR HUMANITY HAS COME. I CRY FOR TEHRAN CAUSE IT REMINDS ME HOW FAR WE HAVE TO GOIRAN, BROTHER, SISTER, WE ARE ONE

Iranian authorities must refrain from using excessive violence against those protesting against the recent election results

Since President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was declared the winner in the June 12 elections in Iran, there have been widespread protests against the contested election results. The Iranian authorities have responded with violence and repression. Reports indicate that large numbers of people were severely beaten by riot police and that several people have been fatally shot Furthermore, over 100 people are reported to have been arrested, including the brother of former President Mohammad Khatami. Amnesty International is concerned that those detained may be subjected to torture and ill-treatment. The Iranian authorities have attempted to stop the flow of information both among Iranians and from Iranians to those outside by blocking cell phone communication, text messaging and email. Amnesty International is also concerned that the protests, which have already drawn massive crowds in Tehran and other cities in Iran, may be met with increased levels of violence by Iranian authorities. AI calls for the authorities to exercise restraint in response to further demonstrations and to release all those who have been detained for peacefully expressing their opinions about the results of the election. It also calls for an end to restrictions on the right to freedom of expression and association, including the freedom to receive and impart information and ides.» Read Background Information

The following letter from an Iranian student was received by The Jerusalem Post via a professor at a leading American university with close ties to Iran:

'Movement by the people, for the people'

Salaam, sorry if I didn't answer to your e-mails. The Internet connection is extremely slow these days... Yahoo messenger, MSN, text messaging, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and all reformist and networking Web sites are filtered. (I just got to briefly log in to Facebook last night with a "filtershekan.")
There are rallies every day... organized by word of mouth from one event to the other, and then by phone calls, and strangers just telling you to show up as they pass you by or as you are waiting behind red lights. Yesterday, it was supposed to be from Enghelab to Azadi, but it literally started at Emam Hossein Sq. (Fooziyeh) and spread all the way to Ekabatan. The number of protesters should be estimated in the millions. They were from every layer of society.
Southern Teheranis, Northern rich kids, Chaadoris, Ghertis, Hizbullahi, young, old, kids, etc. A huge sample of the Iranian nation, with all its diversity, was there, determined to make a change. They feel betrayed and insulted.

Helicopters were flying over our heads to assess the crowd. People would wave at them and whistle and making sure they were seen so that they report their presence to the authorities (or authority).
The radio and TV warned people all day long not to attend, as the rally didn't have the "permission from the Ministry of Interior" and warned of serious consequences if it took place, but no one cared.

var adsonar_ps=10912223;
var adsonar_zw=200;
var adsonar_zh=200;
var adsonar_jv='ads.adsonar.com';

Everybody went. The Yegaan vijeh (anti-riot police) first tried to intimidate people as they were gathering, but the immensity of the crowd then made them back up and hide in a nearby police station.
Today, the rally is supposed to be at Meydoon Vali Asr. There are words that the next one will be in front of Sedaa o Sima (National TV station).
Yesterday the rally was calm and peaceful until the crowd started to disperse at the end. Then the Lebaas shakhsi (armed thugs without uniform) and some anti-riot units showed up with more confidence. They started a fire in one corner of Azadi to attract and entrap the most enthusiastic of protesters, then started firing tear gas and shooting.
I didn't see it myself, but I heard that a man was shot in the eye.
Chants were all either conducted against Ahmadinejad or in support of Mousavi. Nothing more "sensitive" than that. It's what I call "smart protest." People are extremely vigilant about what to say... Some chants were a little more "personal" and a bit more offensive to Ahmadinejad.
Mousavi, [former president Muhammad] Khatami, [his brother] Muhammad Reza Khatami, [Teheran Mayor Gholamhossein] Karbaschi, Masjed Jamei, [former vice president Muhammad Ali] Abtahi, [reformist Mahdi] Karoubi all showed up. I missed Mousavi's speech, but Abtahi was just a few meters away from where we were. People cheered them a lot.
Apart from rallies, people cry "Allahu Akbar" every night around 9 p.m. from rooftops and cars (well, it is supposed to be 9 p.m., but Iranians are always late. So they really start around 9:30). There are also sporadic riots and tire-burning in town. Night riots are much more violent. Sa'adat Abad, Shahran, Yousef Abad are some of the hottest corners. Universities are really tense, too. Police and thugs have already stormed dorms a couple of times and seriously wounded students.
As for casualties, all we hear is rumors. I can't confirm any... One thing that I can tell with certainty is that people are really determined. They all say there is no stop to this until they get results...
Girls are extremely active in all these rallies (a little less in night riots where patches of young men are more visible). They courageously charge anti-riot police, chant slogans in front of them, lead the crowd, etc., but they are equally beaten too. The police seem to have no limit in the use of force. They are disproportionately violent. They don't use fire weapons, but they don't go easy on you with their clubs. They literally beat up protesters to death if they don't get rescued by fellow protesters or somehow break away and run.
The level of brutality is exceptional, but it is amazing to see how people stand up to them. I heard from many witnesses that thugs were brought by bus from smaller cities to assist police in the crackdown...
I estimate that more people will show up for today's rally compared to yesterday.
The word is that everyone should wear black with green bracelets or scarfs. The good thing about Vali Asr square is that it is right in "downtown" Teheran. It would be such a show of force by people. The national TV can't just keep ignoring it. (Not one single word of yesterday's rally was reported last night, except a really short footage showing Mir Hossein standing on his car to talk to his "supporters" that "contest" the results. The camera didn't zoom out one bit to show the immensity of the crowd...).
Pray for protesters and for the country. Your support means a lot, as people happily tell each other how Iranians abroad are gathering around embassies to support them. Internet sites are filtered here, so please inform people inside of events and rallies by e-mail if you hear of any. I testify with confidence that this is the most authentic, grassroots and beautiful movement from the people, by the people and for the people. No outside force, no money, no conspiracy is involved.
It's all about people telling each other where to gather next time, pledge to show up and keep their promise. There is a spirit of fraternity, determination, resistance, courage, solidarity and generosity that no words can describe. I thank God to have seen this in my lifetime, and I wouldn't trade it for the world.

As we got close to Enghelab square we found all the roads ending inthe square were blocked from a blocks away. We parked and went towardsthe square ofcourse, all the streets were filled with basijis and afew, municipal workers! with bats and helmets, poor guys did not wantanything to do with this. As we walked west towrds Azadi, we wereattacked by a group of "Robocups". A freind of mine, joe got a bat inhis back and I lost the other 2, later finding out that one of themhas dislocated his arm while beaten by the cups. Me and my"unlost"friend walked further down and there was a street fight goingon between people and the armed militia. We have captured a few blocksand every body were trying to hold their inter section from basijcoming fro the south. Through out the entire time tear gas was flyingtowards us, from all directions. We left the seen and went furthernorth to find out, that all the intersections were blocked, peoplewere fighting with them on all intersections, streets and allysaround the square. They burnt 2 buses near a main intersection.Traffic was backed up for miles and people were honking horns all overthe place. As we were walking home we got attacked by another groupand my poor friend got another one in the leg.

Situacao no Iran

Galera
